Compulsive Gambler in Recovery
It is better to build character than to be one.

Bike/Run
We finished playing golf much sooner than expected because we weaved our way through the course. I did give my daughter a few golfing pointers and also versed her on what it is like to play golf very quickly. Golf can be a very time consuming game and some rounds can take over five hours when the course is crowded. However; today since it was just the two of us we went around/through a few groups and completed the 18 hours in less than 3 hours which is extraordinarily fast. This kept my daughter interested and really all she cared about was driving the golf cart. She was very proud of her excellent golf shot but more proud being behind the wheel of the golf cart!!
Since we finished playing golf so fast we stopped to pick-up a few things from the grocery store. Money being what it which is “tight” we have let the food supply dwindle to near nothing in the house so we needed more than a few things. We only picked up a few things but everything is just so expensive now compared with only two years so 40 bucks doesn’t buy much.
It was a wonderful day with my daughter and the weekend remained focused on my children. I was due to run this morning but I like to wake up with my family on Sunday mornings I couldn’t bring myself to get out of bed. I remained and woke up with my wife as we tuned in for another episode of CBS’ “Sunday Morning” program and waited for my son to come into the room. He did come into the room and we had a blast wrestling around.
My wife had to go to church this morning not to attend mass but to sign us up as a family. I still have “issues” with organized religion but I would not infringe my views on my wife nor my children. I understand the importance of going to church in the life of my wife and subsequently our children.
I have yet to attend mass with them because they have been going when I have GA meetings and my wife understands the need for me to stay in recovery which means going to meetings. This does send a strange/mixed signal to our children because they feel I should go to church with them as well. They are correct because this should be a family outing not just my wife. I need to do the right thing and I will, it is just taking me longer than it should.
My wife went to the church meeting and I decided to take my children on a bike/run. Since I didn’t get my run in this morning I thought it would be a perfect combination of me being able to run and being with my children. I effectively took my children on the same route I took “Rudy” on a few months ago. This is when Rudy had enough of running and stopped about a ½ mile away from our dear friends’ house.
The children did very well but we had to take a break at a local park so my son could play and my daughter joined him. Also as we were going along my daughter said to me, “Daddy I don’t know how you can run so far because I am having a hard time pedaling!!” She also mentioned the word “crazy” as I kept going further and further away from our house. We ended the 10 mile journey with a jaunt up a nice hill not far from our house and my son had a bit of an incident. Somehow he fell off of his bicycle and hurt his leg. I am not the most compassionate when I start getting into my running “zone” which is why I doubted the validity of his injury. I had convinced my son to get back on his bicycle and after a few minutes of pedaling his “severe” injury was a mere scratch on his leg.
I have to give credit to my daughter because she made it a point to go all the way up the hill in spite of her brother’s troubles and she was very proud to make it all the way up and all the way down. We arrived home a sweaty mess and we had to march upstairs into the shower. It was a wonderful way to spend two hours on a Sunday morning/afternoon combining two things I really enjoy; my children and running.
Everyone was cleaned up and we had some shopping to do. We hadn’t done our “Costco run” since coming back from New Jersey so we were overdue. We did some substantial “damage” at Costco and I have no idea how we could spend so much money and have very little to show for it!!! At least we have a stock of items we need and hopefully it will last more than two weeks!!!
It was yet another great day spent with my family. I had a wonderful time with them on the bike/run and we (in spite of the cost!) had a good time as a family shopping at Costco. This is what life is all about; those small moments which last a lifetime. Things are moving in a magnificent direction and I love each of these moments so much which are thanks to being in recovery. It was indeed a fantastic weekend!!!
