Too Much Homework?
There are days that just seem to go by without much fanfare and today were one of those days. Last night my son did very well at his baseball practice and it was very cool watching the six to eight year old do their best at the baseball skills. My son had a good hit which even made it to the outfield and comparatively speaking this was one of the longest hits of the practice. I’m not sure what happens to my son when he steps on the field but he does seem more apprehensive than when we are practicing on the same field. I do suspect he will improve as the season continues.
There were several of my son’s teammates who became slightly bored with the practice that they actually sat down in the outfield. On one hand I am sad not to be an actual manager or coach on my son’s team but on the other hand I am a bit relieved. It is a difficult chore keeping 10 boys at this age engaged for a 2 hour period (which I think is too long and thankfully the practices will only be an hour and a half from this point forward) is a tough task. Also; there are parents who don’t realize that staying silent has its benefits so once again everything continues to work out the way it is meant to be.
This morning was a designed day off from working out since I went very hard yesterday and this “old” body needs the rest. Everyone was okay this morning and my daughter is getting better making her way to the breakfast table with enough time to eat and get to school on time. My son is a joy in the morning and is always at the breakfast table on time and has even enough time to play before departing for school. Everything went very well this morning and as I mentioned it was one of those days that nothing much happened.
When I was at the fire camp my roommate and I would spend so much time together there were points where we ran out of things to say. When these moments arrived we would state, “I got nothing!” Well today I really don’t have anything as well. I am wrapping up things at work and planning for my new position next week. The days go by so quickly and today went by in a flash. I was coming home from the office when the rest of the family was coming home from my daughter’s softball practice.
My daughter has “hit the ground running” with school and is doing more homework than ever before. In fact I think she is doing more homework than I did in college!!! That really isn’t saying much but my daughter is doing a great deal of homework. Tonight I think she had 3 hours of homework but most of this was in advance of tomorrow when we go to the Angels game.
My daughter wanted to have everything done before we went to the game which is why she was doing homework all night long. Even with the advance homework she does have a great deal of homework. This seems to be the complaint of many other parents with children in the fifth grade. I am all for more work if it is truly preparing the child for the future and from what I have seen most of the homework makes sense. I am hoping my daughter gets into a rhythm and the time spent on homework will decrease. It is still very early in the school year and to my daughter’s credit she hasn’t complained once about the amount of homework. I think the parents complain more than the child!
