Baseball Oh So Good!!!
Once again I have fallen behind so here is the “Readers Digest” version over the past few days since I really don’t remember what I did during the day today. I guess it wasn’t a “memorable” day as the memories came when my son had his baseball game. I seem to remember these much better than my regular day. I do remember that I didn’t have to venture off to the gym as my training schedule has been tailored to the upcoming marathon this Sunday. This was the first Wednesday during the training program that I had off due to the fact that the long run (marathon) this week is on a Sunday not on Saturday.
The day went by somehow and it was time for my son’s baseball game. This was a “breakout” game for the team not in the sense of offense/hitting but in defense. The defense has come a long way since the beginning of the season and my son did contribute with his defense as well. He was in the pitcher’s position (they don’t have a pitcher per se since the machine pitches but there needs to be a fielder in this position) and a fly ball was hit to him; he caught the pop fly (making up for the fly ball he dropped the batter prior) and threw to first making a double play. This was much like what his sister did a week ago and this was the start of the very good defensive play.
The game went very quickly and it seemed the usual base hits were being turned into outs by both teams. Normally the kids on the team would reach base but today they were turned away. My son struck out in his first at bat which was followed by a very solid single up the middle but his last two at bats were ground outs to the first baseman. This means he hit the ball in three of the four at bats but officially went only 1 for 4 with one run batted in. The final tally had my son’s Angels ahead 8 to 5 and although there are no official records his team is still undefeated.
I don’t know how it all happened but my son’s team is loaded with hitters and now fielders. The kids have come a long way since the beginning of the season and these improvements are very noticeable. The little kids who could barely field the ground balls earlier on are now making very good plays. I guess practice does make perfect and although many of the kids did miss practice earlier this week the boys on my son’s team are making very big strides. Even my dear son is very comfortable behind the plate and my constant nagging of him to stay down when the pitch came over the plate has been replaced by a “nice stop” as he catches most of the pitches.
It really is very rewarding watching these children improve and it is so cool to be actually “in the moment” recognizing the improvements. I attribute all of this to recovery and without recovery life could not possibly be this good. Earlier in the day I was doing some administrative things for the office and I entered into a conversation about recovery with a stranger and we had an instant bond. I didn’t know much about recovery over three years ago and I know I have a very long way to go but what I am experiencing is truly incredible in every facet of my life.
This errand found me at an automobile dealership and once I told the salesperson what I did the entire “hard sell” had gone away. It was one person helping another person which is what the world should be all about. I know there are some cynics out there may think otherwise but I like to focus on the positive and today was filled with all positive from the very beginning; life is wonderful!!!
