Compulsive Gambler in Recovery
It is better to build character than to be one.

Season is Over
It was a rare full day inside the “real” office yesterday. I say “real” because I still don’t view my normal (which is my home) office as a real office even though most of my work is performed inside those four walls. There is something to be said of interacting with others during the work day and I had a great deal of this yesterday. I do work for some very intelligent people who are very business savvy and yesterday afternoon the ideas were percolating. I did suggest we figure out who we want to be when we grow up and focus on those issues instead of flying by the seat of our pants and this seemed to be well received. I don’t know what the future will bring for me or for the company but I do know the present is wonderful and as long as I stay focused in recovery there is no reason why the future won’t be as wonderful.
Yesterday evening ended with a viewing of “Heroes” and it seems they are going back to their original concept in the first season. There has been an influx of heroes over this season and now the focus is back on those core heroes. I think it is an interesting program and really the only program I do make time for. I have given up on “Life on Mars” which is a well crafted show but I can’t get past the concept. I understand Heroes is a science fiction show but I just don’t see “Life on Mars” in the same realm. The acting and scenery is very good but the story seems to fall short. Anyhow watching “Heroes” was a very good way to end the day.
This morning the children were off from school since it is Veteran’s Day and I would be remiss to say thank you to all the men and women who have served this country; thank you. The children got to sleep in which suited my daughter just fine and I made my way to the gym with everything snuggled comfortably in their beds. I got in a very good workout and it seems the faster I run the easier the session becomes. Today was another 7 mile run and my pace was supposed to be the same as yesterday but I decided to run a bit faster. I was feeling better than yesterday and the workout did indeed go well.
I came home with everyone in the house. The day called for going to the movies but I couldn’t join in since I had work to do at home. I am working on a project which is a fairly large project that will take some time to complete. It is one of those projects where finding a starting point is difficult so it took me a little while to get started. I do have a character flaw of procrastinating and this was evident today. I am very distracted by bouncing around on the internet and today this is what I did longer than anticipated. I finally got my act together and started working on the project. I made some gains but have a long way to go.
I had a very good conversation with a very dear friend today who is celebrating their birthday. This is a friend who has seen me through the very difficult times and never wavered. We were neighbors a few years ago but now live a few miles apart. We haven’t seen much of each other over the past few months but as we talked today it was just like picking up where we left off. This is one of those friends where no matter how much time goes by when we speak it is just like we spoke yesterday. I always enjoy our conversations and hopefully we will be getting together next week.
The family returned home from their movie journey and it was time to go to my daughter’s softball game. This was the second game of the double elimination tournament which meant that the team that loses doesn’t play anymore. My daughter was nervous because she was scheduled to pitch but after a few minutes of talking with her she was a bit more relaxed. I was hoping my daughter’s team would win so they would get a chance to play another day but it just wasn’t meant to be. The game started off promising as her team got off to a 1-0 lead thanks to my daughter who drove in the first run with a single. The lead was short lived as the other team scored 2 runs in the bottom of the inning and from there my daughter’s team never really caught up.
My daughter had a terrific game going 2 for 2 while driving in 2 runs and scoring another run. She did pitch in a relief role and struck out two batters while giving up a few hits which should have been outs but weren’t because of errors. My daughter’s team just couldn’t make the plays necessary to keep the game close and they ended up losing 10-6. Surprisingly my daughter wasn’t devastated by the loss probably because she was the best player on her team today. She did have a great game and took the loss in stride. She does want a trophy and she is dedicated to playing softball again in the spring. I know she will practice from now until the season starts and it will be very interesting to see how much she will improve because she will improve.
